Description

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the 2017 Smithsonian Folklife Festival will explore the complexity of American identity and creativity.

Event Details

“Circus Arts” will take visitors behind the scenes to explore the cultural and artistic expressions of the ever-evolving circus, and “On the Move” will examine migration and cultural identity from the vantage point of America’s youth.

Together, the programs expand on the work that the Festival has done for 50 years—exploring timeless questions of identity, representation, and community engagement—this year, with a focus on the rich stories and continuing traditions that make America the diverse landscape it is today.

Join us on the National Mall for two weeks of free circus performances, concerts, hands-on workshops, cooking and sports demonstrations, and much more. Inside the Smithsonian's Arts and Industries Building, shop for artisan-made goods in the Festival Marketplace and learn how to juggle and tightrope walk in the Circus School.

A variety of Folklife Festival food favorites, gelato, and beverages will be available for purchase. All concessions use recyclable and compostable wares, helping to make the Festival the greenest event on the Mall!
