Description

We are inviting you to an amazing Turkey Trot this Thanksgiving Day @ Mosby Woods Pool Fairfax, VA!

Event Details

What is the Mosby Woods Turkey Trot & Sidewalk Stroll? A low-key Fun Run/walk through our neighborhood to celebrate our community and neighbors, families, health, friendship, and the spirit of the holiday — as well as a chance to support our neighbors in need. There is no formal entry fee for this event, but all participants are asked to contribute non-perishable food items as their “entry fee.” All non-perishables received will be donated to the Food For Others food bank in Merrifield nearby. Non-participant spectators can donate food items for FFO too!

How is it free of charge? In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we are grateful for our community. This year, the costs associated with this event are being covered by the Mosby Woods Community Association and by local Realtor Rob Traister. Many thanks to the MWCA and to Rob for this generosity!! Because the event is free for participants, we ask everyone involved to “pay it forward” and invest back into our community with your donations of non-perishables (see below for details).

Suggested age limits: Anyone aged 2-102 can participate. (If you are outside this age range but still want to participate, we’ll make an exception for you!)

When does it occur? The 2022 in-person event will be held on Thanksgiving morning, November 24. A 1K kids’ run will start at 8:30am, followed by the main 5K event at 9:00am. (All participants and support volunteers should be able to return to their kitchens by 10:00 that morning.)

Where is it held? The start/finish this year will be at the Mosby Woods Pool, which is located along Plantation Parkway in the Mosby Woods neighborhood of Fairfax City. The pool facility includes a large parking lot and a restroom facility, which will be open for this event.

All registered participants will receive:

A bib (number) for every registrant, for both races;
A finisher’s medal (for all kids’ run finishers as well as for the first 250 5K participants);
Prizes for top finishers in all events;
Exclusive access(!) ? to a collection box for donations of non-perishables;
...and - most importantly - The reward of having contributed to meeting some of our less fortunate neighbors’ needs during this holiday season!

What can I contribute as my virtual entry fee? It is important to shop & donate items generously, as our local area has seen tremendous hardship for many families over the past year. The pain that families in poverty face grows more acute in the holiday months of November and December. FFO accepts all non-perishables, but particularly welcomes the following types of items:

canned meats (ham, turkey, chicken, tuna, beef)
peanut butter
canned stew/chili
cereal
canned fruit in juice
Mac and cheese
dried or canned beans
pasta
pasta sauce
canned tomatoes (crushed, peeded, diced, etc.)
1 lb. bags of rice
100% fruit juice
oil
Non-Food Items: Can Openers, and New or Clean Reusable Grocery Bags circa size 8½ x 14 x 15 inches

The event organizers are mindful of the ongoing spread of viruses, and are taking the below precautions to ensure a SAFE and fun event for all.

The start/finish location has specifically been chosen for its spacious location, to permit adequate room for distancing for all.
The use of masks is optional.
A PA system will be used by event organizers to help prevent crowding and to ensure all can hear all race commands.
Each finisher medal will be individually packaged in a plastic bag to minimize personal contact, and will be handed to each finisher at the finish line. Medals will not be placed around finishers’ necks.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Given the low-key nature of this event, no roads will be closed for this event. Rather, the suggested run/walk course consists of paved sidewalks, paved/gravel trails, and safe street crossings. The 5K course encompasses a number of beautiful locations in our neighborhood! The 1K kids’ run out-and-back course course is entirely on a sidewalk, with no crossings at all.
